Drue Brandenburg, Stillwater resident and adjunct instructor at Meridian, is cooking up memories about the iconic Ancestor restaurant. The business closed in 1990, but Brandenburg was recently inspired to host a class based on its simply delicious cuisine.
Brandenburg worked as a chef at the Ancestor for many years before he went on to become a corporate chef. Then, two years ago, he moved from Florida back to Stillwater.
“The Ancestor was a comfortable place, like going to your grandma’s house,” Brandenburg said. “Starting out we had a simple two-item menu that was recited by memory. In 1970 pan-fried chicken cost $2.95 and a top sirloin steak was $3.50.”
The class will teach participants how to make the Ancestor’s most popular items like pan-fried chicken, mini biscuits and mashed potatoes. Students will also learn how to make the restaurant’s signature salad dressing and other cooking tips.
Brandenburg is set to teach The Ancestor: A Stillwater Restaurant Experience on June 12 and 26 at 6 p.m. at Meridian’s Main Campus in Stillwater. Space is limited, so enroll today by calling 405-377-3333.
“Coming to these classes gives you the benefit of personalized instruction,” Brandenburg said. “You can learn things like how to use a knife and handle food in a safe and sanitary manner.”
This isn’t the only course Brandenburg is set to teach at Meridian’s Main Campus in Stillwater. His upcoming courses include Hollandaise for Days, Egg-cellent Breakfast and Cultural Experience: Cajun Cuisine.
