COSTUMING

The costuming department in the film industry is responsible for designing, creating, and maintaining costumes that reflect a film’s characters, setting, and overall tone. Costumers works closely with the director, production designer, and actors to ensure the costumes align with the script’s narrative and character development.

Costuming courses will take place at our South Campus in Guthrie located at 3025 S. Division St., Guthrie, OK 73044. No virtual option is available for this series.

INTRODUCTION TO COSTUME DESIGNING FOR FILM

The foundational course will provide an overview of the art and craft of costume designing for film. The session will explore how costume designers play a vital role in bringing characters to life, setting the tone for a film, and enhancing storytelling through wardrobe choices.

COSTUME DESIGNING VS. PERSONAL STYLING — UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE

Explore the key differences between costume designing for film and personal styling. While both roles involve dressing individuals, their objectives, approaches, and creative processes differ significantly. The session will focus primarily on costume design, emphasizing its role in storytelling and creative changes, while touching on personal styling and professional attire for costume designers.

SCRIPT BREAKDOWN & CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT FOR COSTUME DESIGNING

Learn how to break down a script and use costume design as a tool for character development. Using a short film script, explore how to analyze the text, understand the characters, and make creative wardrobe decisions. This course will also cover important distinctions and practical considerations between wardrobe, props, makeup, and special effects (SFX), including handling blood, water, and other non-obvious costume changes.

COLLABORATION & TEAM BUILDING FOR COSTUME DESIGNERS

This course focuses on the importance of collaboration and team building within the costume design process. We will explore how costume designers and their teams work closely with other departments, such as production design, makeup, and cinematography, to create a cohesive visual language for a film. Participants will learn the value of pre-production meetings, the collaborative process, working with directors, and the specific roles and etiquette within the wardrobe department.
