Now that Oklahoma permits medical marijuana use, employees are increasingly turning to cannabis as a treatment option for various health conditions.

On September 8, Meridian Technology Center and the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce will virtually host “Hazed and Confused – Navigating Medical Marijuana in the Workplace.”

During this highly engaging session, presenter Mackenzie Wilfong will offer an in-depth discussion of Oklahoma medical marijuana legislation and regulations, focusing on the current state of the law. She will also provide guidance to help employers determine which positions are safety-sensitive and, therefore, exempt from protections afforded to holders of medical marijuana licenses.  Wilfong will also discuss modifications to current drug-free workplace policies, including the usage of a model reasonable suspicion checklist to use if a supervisor suspects drug use prior to requiring a drug test.

All session participants will also be provided with templates to notify employees of their safety-sensitive position, medical marijuana employment policies and a model reasonable suspicion checklist. Attendees will also receive sample notifications to ensure employees are aware of the safety-sensitive nature of their position.

Wilfong is the General Counsel for Tulsa Community College, which serves over 25,000 students on four campuses in Tulsa county. Following law school, Wilfong practiced litigation at a national law firm in Kansas City, where she specialized in education and employment law. After leaving private practice, she joined the United States Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights as a federal enforcement attorney investigating allegations of harassment and discrimination in educational institutions in a five-state region. Most recently, she was Associate General Counsel for the Board of Regents of the Oklahoma State University and Agricultural and Mechanical Colleges, representing nine colleges and universities across Oklahoma.
