Learn what it takes to scout, secure, and manage film locations. From an introduction to the department to understanding the in-depth research and permitting processes to securing sites that match a script, classes in this area focus on the logistics needed to keep a production rolling smoothly.

This course will provide an overview of the Locations Department in film and TV production. Time will be spent discussing the variety of jobs within the Locations department and breaking down what makes each position unique. Additional topics will include the skills needed to be successful in this department and what types of careers easily transition into this role.

Locations Scouts are tasked with finding the perfect spots to bring a script to life. They scour cities, towns, and landscapes, hunting for the ideal settings that match the director's vision. This four-night course will break down the specific role and responsibilities of the Locations Scout and cover the tools and technology used for initial location research and on-site visits.

Time will be spent on how to effectively communicate with the film's Locations Manager and other members of the film production team. Participants will also learn best practices to use when approaching owners of potential location sites as well as safety, security and ethical considerations in location scouting.

Locating an ideal setting for a film or TV production is just the beginning. Once a site has been selected, Location Scouts must consider logistics, permits, and the overall feasibility of turning a location into a set.

This advanced level course will cover the budgeting process in location scouting, location permits and insurance, location release forms and location agreement, financial reporting and documentation, as well as legal and environmental regulations related to scouting and filming.

Justin Fortney, Tourism and Community Development Director for the City of Guthrie, will be a guest speaker in this series to provide additional perspective on working with cities to secure permits.

Photography plays a key role in the Locations Department. However, not just any photo will do. This advanced course will focus on how to take photographs that efficiently convey the details of a location to a production company. Elements such as visual appeal, composition, versality, and logistics will be discussed. Participants will also learn about specialized kit equipment and techniques. Attendees will also learn how to create scouting reports and build an image database for future location scouting.

Photographer Brent Niles will be a guest speaker in this series to provide tips on taking quality photos of buildings and landscape. Explore his work here
