Nonprofit Board Member Training

This comprehensive 7-hour training session is designed to equip nonprofit board members with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in their roles and drive their organization’s success. The training will cover the key components of effective board governance, legal responsibilities, and best practices to ensure a well-functioning board. Through engaging presentations, interactive discussions, and practical exercises, attendees will leave with actionable insights and tools to strengthen their board’s governance and organizational impact.

Registration is $35 per person and includes lunch.

Key Topics Include:

  • Board Governance: Understanding the distinction between governance and management, and what board governance entails.
  • Legal Duties: A deep dive into the fiduciary duties of care, loyalty, obedience, and transparency that every board member must uphold.
  • Board Management Focus: Exploring the two critical areas a board oversees—segregation of duties and effective decision-making.
  • Roles and Responsibilities: Clarifying the roles of governance committees and defining “who does what by when” to ensure accountability and streamlined operations.
  • Orientation and Succession Planning: Establishing clear expectations, evaluating performance, and building a strong pipeline for board leadership through effective orientation and succession planning.

  • Session 3: Legal Compliance, Ethics, & Finance – September 9, 11am to 3pm
  • Session 4: Public Awareness, Engagement, & Advocacy – December 9, 11am to 3pm

Series registration is $100 and includes course materials and lunch for one attendee. Registration for individual sessions are not available. All sessions take place from 11 AM to 3 PM at Meridian Technology Center’s  Main Campus, located at 1312 S. Sangre Rd in Stillwater.

This training series is sponsored by United Way of Payne County, and each session will be delivered by facilitators from Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits.

The Standards for Excellence® program provides nonprofits with the guiding principles and best practices essential for achieving excellence in the sector. Through this comprehensive 4-session series by the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits, you will gain tools, policies, and resources to build a stronger, more effective organization. Each registration includes registration in all four sessions to maximize learning. Organizations that attend for all four sessions can earn 12 SHRM PDCs upon completion.

 

Session 1: Mission, Strategy, & Evaluation | March 12

Dive into the core of your nonprofit’s purpose with a focus on mission alignment, strategic planning, and program evaluation. This session provides actionable insights to guide your organization’s vision and measure impact effectively.

Recommended Participants: Executive Director & Board Chair (or other Board member)

 

Session 2: Leadership, Board, Staff, & Volunteers | June 10

Explore best practices for governance, leadership, and fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion. Learn how to foster a collaborative environment among board members, staff, and volunteers to build a thriving nonprofit culture.

Recommended Participants: Executive Director & Board Chair or HR Director

 

Session 3: Legal Compliance, Ethics, & Finance | September 9

Build your nonprofit’s foundation by enhancing your understanding of financial management, legal compliance, and ethical standards. This session covers budgeting, reporting, and the ethical practices necessary for organizational accountability and sustainability.

Recommended Participants: Executive Director & CFO/COO, Board Treasurer, or HR/Operations

 

Session 4: Public Awareness, Engagement, & Advocacy | December 9

Learn strategies for amplifying your nonprofit’s voice through effective communication, stakeholder engagement, and advocacy efforts. This session equips you to build public trust and drive impactful change.

Recommended Participants: Executive Director & Development/External Relations Director, Public Policy Director, or Board Chair
