Meridian Technology Center students Bryant Bunyard and Jack Harris proved they were the best of the best when they earned first place awards during the recent national SkillsUSA contest.

Bunyard, an Information Technology student, won the Internet of Things and Smart Home contest that required him to install a home theater system, computer networking, video security equipment and construction of the various cables used at each of the stations. The Morrison student also had to take a written test covering computer networking fundamentals, audio and video fundamentals, home security and surveillance systems, telecommunications standards and structured wiring.

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration student Harris won the Job Skills Demonstration contest. During this event, Harris had to demonstrate and explain an entry-level skill used in his area of study. The Stillwater student showed judges how to properly flare a copper pipe to allow new connections.

Full-time adult and high school students attending Meridian can join one of several student organizations related to their field of study: Business Professionals of America; Family, Career and Community Leaders of America; HOSA – Future Health Professionals; or SkillsUSA.

These organizations provide students an opportunity to gain leadership skills and ultimately compete against other technology center students from across the state and nation. During each round of competition, students develop and demonstrate skills that include public speaking, presenting, working together as a team, interviewing and technical skills related to their industry. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, most CTSOs, including SkillsUSA, held virtual skills contests this year.

Additional Meridian Made Winners

Over the recent months, a total of 28 high school students and adults placed first in their organization’s state skills contests, earning the chance to advance and compete at the national level. This year, since the contests are virtual, students placing second and third could also advance.

SkillsUSA students in the top 10 include Guthrie student Ashton Permenter and Stillwater students Alleyn Campbell, Cantrell Haley, Christopher Flemming, Christopher Jones, Eli Weierman, Evan Reitan, Gemma Aguilera, Logan Holman, Luke Cheatwood, Nicholas Kifer, Sean Hogan and Trace Abney. Stillwater students Jake Little, Dillon Henry and Orlando student Lake Aldridge competed at the national level but did not place.
